WHAT IS THE DANIEL FAST?

The Daniel Fast is a spiritual discipline based on the biblical accounts of Daniel’s fasting in the books of Daniel 1:8-16 and Daniel 10:2-3. It is a partial fast where certain foods are avoided, and the focus is on prayer, seeking God, and spiritual growth.  Food fasting shouldn’t be done by those who are pregnant or on certain medications. Consult a medical professional for more information.

BIBLICAL BASIS:

Daniel 1:8-16: Daniel and his friends abstained from the king’s rich foods

and ate only vegetables and water to honor God.

Daniel 10:2-3: Daniel mourned for three weeks, eating no choice food, meat, or wine.

What Is Required for a Daniel Fast?

The Daniel Fast is about both physical discipline and spiritual focus.

FOODS TO EAT
• Whole, plant-based foods:
• Vegetables (fresh, frozen, or canned without additives)
• Fruits (fresh, frozen, dried without added sugar)
• Whole grains (quinoa, oats, brown rice, barley, etc.)
• Legumes (beans, lentils, peas)
• Nuts and seeds (unsalted and raw)
• Healthy oils (olive, coconut, avocado in small amounts)
• Beverages: Water is the primary drink, though herbal teas

without sweeteners may be allowed.

FOODS TO AVOID
• Meat and animal products: No chicken, beef, fish, or eggs.
• Dairy products: Milk, cheese, yogurt, butter.
• Sweeteners: Sugar, honey, artificial sweeteners.
• Leavened bread and refined foods: White bread, pastries, and anything

with yeast or processed flour.
• Fried or heavily processed foods: Chips, fast food, etc.
• Beverages: No coffee, tea, alcohol, or sugary drinks. Spiritual Focus:

Prayer: Set aside specific times for prayer and seeking God’s direction.

Scripture Reading: Study and meditate on God’s Word regularly.

Reflection: Use this time to examine your heart and grow closer to God.

DURATION

Typically, the Daniel Fast lasts 21 days, reflecting the time Daniel mourned in Daniel 10:2-3. However, the duration can be adjusted to suit personally and medically.

By fasting and praying collectively, we aim to strengthen our connection

with the Lord and cultivate compassion for those in need.
